Synergy is based on Hatha yoga, is practised under special conditions (high temparatures and humidity) and refers to a particular sequence of different Asanas.' (P.H., 28.09.05) In the original Californian version 45 exercises are being carried out within 90 minutes at a high pace. It is therefore called yoga with a flow, the "Synergy Flow".
The combination of heat and humidity stems from the point of origin of Synergy yoga which is California, US - where these are the natural conditions.
We can simulate these conditions with a humidifier and a radiator, but it is not very environmentally friendly, damages the room (mildew!) and is not the ideal choice for our Central European constitution or for people with sensitive joints - especially taking into account that afterwards we do not go outside into a humid and hot environment, but would experience a temparature shock, especially in winter.
Why are these environmental conditions so important for Synergy yoga then? It is because the 'sauna-feeling' is supposed to trigger a strong cleansing and purification process in the body.
So we have a Central European Synergy version:
Similar to the protoype of dynamic yoga, named Ashtanga, the rising of the body temparature is achieved by a special breathing technique, the Ujaya-breath. It is produced in the base of the deliberately tightened throat and makes the body temparature rise, triggering the inner burn-up process.
The humidity level is obtained not by a high humidity level in the air, but by drinking great amounts of water before the Synergy yoga.
The cleansing effect is strongest on an empty stomach (ˈone apple is allowed', P. H.), but since this is often not feasible in everyday life, the 2 hours previous without food are the absolute minimum, therefore the evening is often the ideal time - experience shows that afterwards you are so full of endorphins that you go to bed happy and exhausted and usually skip dinner for the evening. (The clever way of dieting!)
